From 9 to 18 October, Japan Society in New York presents a special programme dedicated to film critic and theorist Shiguéhiko Hasumi, titled Another History of the Movie in America and Japan.
The German writer, film critic, documentary and essay filmmaker Hartmut Bitomsky has passed away.
Silence, Stories, and Images that Speak
Shhh returns to Ostend for its seventh edition on the last weekend of September. The festival, the only one that “declares its love for both silent cinema and the sea,” will take place over two days (26 & 27 September 2025) across multiple locations in the city.
Film Fest Gent 2025
Film Fest Gent 2025 will present Fractured Visions: A Nicolas Roeg Retrospective, a comprehensive programme highlighting the work of the acclaimed British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg.
Pasolini Today & Tomorrow
From October to December 2025, students and teachers from RITCS, ESACT, LA CAMBRE and ULB will work and experiment closely together, inspired by the work and ideas of the Italian poet, filmmaker, novelist, playwright Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–1975).
From September to November, CINEMATEK presents a retrospective dedicated to Dutch filmmaker Frans van de Staak (1943–2001).
MoMA Presents Chantal Akerman Retrospective in New York
From 11 September to 16 October, The Museum of Modern Art in New York is presenting a complete retrospective of Chantal Akerman’s cinematic work, featuring over forty features and rarely screened shorts in newly restored digital versions.

From 26 June to 26 July 2025, Cinéma Galeries in Brussels will present a focus programme dedicated to Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing. As part of this programme, the cinema will host a masterclass with the director on Sunday 29 June.
What sustains cinema, long after the lights come up? For both DAFilms and Sabzian, the answer is reflection – watching, thinking, writing, and reading in communal conversation unbound by societal borders. In this special collaboration between DAFilms and Sabzian, we present a selection of films and texts that invite you to join the dialogue. New Interactive Guide to Every Motion Picture Film Format
Film Atlas is a new joint initiative by FIAF and the George Eastman Museum, made possible through the support of the Louis B. Mayer Foundation. This expansive online resource combines scholarly essays with high-resolution images to trace the history of film as a physical medium – from the beginnings of cinema to the present day.

Conference and Film Programme at CINEMATEK
From June 11 to 14, CINEMATEK, Université libre de Bruxelles, Women and Film History International (WFHI), and University of Antwerp host the conference Women and the Silent Screen XII: Form and Feeling in Silent Cinema. Over four days, panels will present new research and restorations, highlighting archival (re)discoveries of women’s roles in silent film. In tandem, CINEMATEK presents the Women in Silent Film programme, which continues throughout the summer.

Japan Society and Metrograph Host Retrospective in New York
This month, Japan Society presents the first part of a rare retrospective on Japanese director Mikio Naruse, Mikio Naruse: The World Betrays Us, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the master Japanese filmmaker’s birth.
From 30 April to 11 May, Bozar in Brussels focuses on the work of the South Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo. Sabzian is giving away duotickets for several of the planned screenings!
From 30 April to 11 May, Bozar focuses on the work of Hong Sang-soo in a Close-up. During this incomplete retrospective, Bozar is screening nine of his films, accompanied by guest speakers.
On Saturday 26 April 2025, Visite Film Festival #12 is taking place at Out of Sight in Antwerp, offering a programme of several films, performances and conversations.
From July 6 to 12, Cinea is organising a new edition of the Zomerfilmcollege, a yearly summer film school taking place in De Cinema in Antwerp that offers seven days of lectures and film screenings, centered around two film historical themes.
