Pierre Rissient (1936-2018)
Bertrand Tavernier
“He is the very incarnation of the idea of cinema that for his generation has been an instrument for discovering the world. A close buddy of Raoul Walsh and Fritz Lang, having arguments with Joseph Losey (whom he called ‘Loci’), Rissient was the patient architect of his own legend, which began when he was an assistant on the set of A Bout de Souffle.”
Thierry Frémaux1
One month after André S. Labarthe, another legendary French cinephile passed away. Pierre Rissient had an eclectic career as a critic, publicist, programmer, distributor, producer, filmmaker and festival consultant. Rissient served as an artistic adviser to Cannes for decades and helped to bring international recognition to filmmakers such as Abbas Kiarostami by inviting them with their films to the festival for the first time. Other eminent filmmakers that Rissient backed and help guide to greater international stature via festivals were Charles Burnett, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Lino Brocka and Hong Sang-soo. Cannes' Thierry Fremaux acknowledges that Rissient has pushed for the inclusion of Chinese director Bi Gan’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night in this year's Un Certain Regard, where it will premiere in the next few days. Until the last moments, he was hard at work promoting this second film by the director of Kaili Blues (2015).
