Close-up: Souleymane Cissé

Bozar, in collaboration with CINEMATEK, is hosting Close-up: Souleymane Cissé from 1 to 4 April 2025 to honour the late Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé, who passed away on 19 February 2025. Cissé was renowned for his poetic and socially engaged films that significantly influenced world cinema. Notably, his film Yeelen won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1987, making him the first African filmmaker to receive this award. The programme includes screenings of several of Cissé’s films, including Yeelen (1987), Den Muso (1975) – his first feature film – and Finyè [The Wind] (1981). The event opens with A Daughter's Tribute to Her Father, a documentary by Fatou Cissé, offering an intimate look at her father's life and career.

Additionally, Cissé selected films by Mati Diop to be part of the event, including Atlantique and Dahomey. All films will be shown in their original languages with subtitles.
