A COLLECTION OF , 4 film pages

On the occasion of his visit to Bozar in Brussels, Apichatpong Weerasethakul selects five artworks that revolve like satellites around his latest film Memoria (2021), films or other works of art that served as an inspiration or influence, thematically or in terms of form. He chose I Walked with a Zombie (Jacques Tourneur, 1943), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1978), The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974), Empire (Andy Warhol, 1965) and the paintings of Ever Astudillo. “For me, [I Walked with a Zombie] is one of the most beautiful black-and-white films ever made. A white lady in a trance walks through the sugar plantation, drawn by the sound of the drum and the sea waves. Every time I see it, I see something different: a dream of independence, a primitive science fiction, and a fear of others.” Find out more about the films via their corresponding Film Pages below.
